You have to want money to make money

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 | Personal Development with 3 Comments

Yeah, I’ve heard it all. Money can’t buy love, money can’t buy happiness, money is the root of all evil. Repeat these lines enough times, you’ll actually start to believe in them.  For the better part of my life I have been the victim of this line of thinking.

To be sure, money isn’t everything.  But money can’t buy love and happiness?  This is more wishful thinking than it is truth.

Listen, if you’re struggling to make ends meet and you don’t have money to pay the bills, you’re more likely to fight with your wife and family. You’d have low self-esteem as you’re afraid to be seen as a failure by others.  You fear that your children won’t look up to you.  These are not the conditions that are too conducive to happiness.

If you’re rich, on the other hand, you have more options in life.  You have more choices when it comes to what food to eat, where to dine, which clothes to wear, where you go for vacation, who you date, and so on and so forth.  You feel good about yourself. So, while money can’t directly buy love and happiness, it can facilitate these things.

Like it or not, we live in a world dominated by capitalists.  Personally, I don’t care for the clothes I wear, just as long as they’re comfortable and look good on me.  But the capitalists tell us that if we don’t live in a big mansion, drive a Mercedes, or wear an expensive Italian designer brand, we’re somehow inferior to those who do. Somehow, they’ve managed to use money not only to control the distribution of wealth, but also that of happiness. Since all of us are more or less programmed to think, feel and act a certain way, we all must play along to maintain a harmonious relationship with our surroundings. Consequently, money is important not only to our material well-being, but also to our sense of accomplishment, self-worth, and security.

Why is it important to want money?

As stated by the title of this article, to make money, you have to want money.  To accomplish anything  in life, you have to first want it.  It starts at the level of intention.  If your intention isn’t clear, and you don’t know what you want in life, then the results are likely to reflect your muddled thinking. Having a clear and deliberate intention is a prerequisite for thorough planning and skillful execution.

If you want to become financially secure, you can’t go through life telling yourself money is the root of all evil– not that it isn’t– and things like that.  You have to harbor a positive attitude toward money.  Money is what it is.  It’s a tool that can lead to much happiness and contentment in life, or if not handled properly, to personal destruction.
